Boiling Frog Syndrome

Boiling Frog Syndrome is a popular metaphor. If you put a frog in a pot full of water and keep the water on fire, the frog normally does not jump out to save itself as the water temperature rises. Instead, its body metabolism keeps on adjusting and balancing the rising temperature of the surrounding. It keeps on balancing the temperature till such time when its body can no longer adjust to the heat. At this point, the frog decides to leave the vessel and tries to jump out. But, Alas! It can no longer do so. It has exhausted all its energy all the while balancing its body temperature. Now it is left with no option but to get boiled with the water and die.

The frog died basically not because of the boiling water, but due to its refusal to recognise the perspective danger and inability to take a futuristic decision. It kept on adjusting to the situation till such time when the things got totally out of its control. When it came to recognise the danger, it was too late to save its life.

Unfortunately, our situation is something like the boiling frog. We are constantly adjusting ourselves to the worsening situation and balancing our life. We are unable to see the danger in perspective and waiting for the time when the situation will turn totally unbearable for us. But just like the frog, we would have lost all our energy by then and would no longer be able to save ourselves.
We must the recognise the imminent danger and act while we still can.
